Living in California City

The 2020 census counted 14,973 residents, a little above the 14,120 recorded in 2010 — a town that has been broadly stable for a generation rather than growing or emptying. Housing here is among the cheapest in California, which is most of the reason anyone new arrives.

Work divides roughly three ways. Some of it is local: the city itself, the schools, the hospital, the shops, and the detention facility on the edge of town, which for a community this size is a large share of local employment and a permanent subject of local politics. Some of it is the aerospace corridor — Edwards Air Force Base and the Mojave Air and Space Port are both within commuting distance. And some of it is remote work by people who left the coast for the price of a house.

What this section does not yet have is the specific, checkable detail that actually decides whether somewhere is liveable: which schools, which utilities and what they cost, how far the nearest emergency room really is, what the commute is at 6am in February. Those are being worked through rather than guessed at.
